Your guy can know the inside of the computer and everything about it but not know the outside wiring configurations that send signals to and from the computer to outside pieces of equipment.
In many instances, the better the person is at working the computer, the less they know, and the less they want to know, about the wiring "stuff".
But if your person does both....
Then it's pretty Awesome.

Yes, buy your own drives....(dohhhhhh! there goes your savings)
NO MATTER WHAT YOUR CONTACT SAYS
....like, "don't worry about it, we have plenty of drives here"...
....you still buy your drives, and nobody else touches your drives or uses your drives when you're not there, you know why?
Because you take them away whenever you aren't there.
Now, if you are going to give the editor free rein to edit even if you aren't there, then he or she takes the drives home, or stores them someplace else AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER.
For all you know, the janitor is a budding filmmaker who edits one hour every night when no one is looking.
If you use their drives, at some point, when no one is looking, a project will come, no one will know what you project is about, and they will delete your job....count on it!
Or, they'll try to keep your files, and add new ones in...and the system will crash.
Either scenario is unnacceptable.
What drives to get....ask your editor....
The prices have dropped!....hopefully enough to accomodate you needs.....
Congratulations!
next topic...."dealing with an editor".......(good luck)
